Bapa Books was the brainchild of Barry Callesen (retired Math teacher & volleyball coach), Skya Nelson (amazing illustrator & artist), and Tanya Callesen (world traveler who adores her grandkids!). The team set out in 2022 to create fun and unique books for the whole family of all ages without the use of computer-generated (AI) content or images. All books were developed through the creativity and love of the team. As prolific readers, they love word search, trivia, and coloring books. Top that with journals to keep track on their hiking trails and books they’ve read, it made perfect sense for them to embark on creating their own line of fun and exciting interactive books. And Bapa Books was born.

Meet the Team
Barry Callesen
Barry Callesen is Bapa. He is a retired math teacher who spent 32 years in the classroom teaching kids the wonders of numbers and how they could be found in every imaginable place and application on earth. His joy and pure enthusiasm for learning touched every child he taught. Barry has been fascinated by puzzles and trivia all his life. This love of problem solving along with his fascination with the whole world sparked the creation of Bapa Books. That combined with his deep love of reading and traveling, became the impetus for every book in our collection.
Skya Nelson
Skya trained as a fine artist under Nataha Lightfoot whose high school art class has a recruitment program with leading animation studios. He attended the San Francisco Art Institute on scholarship and later went to Rhode Island school of design for additional drawing. For more than 20 years Skya sold brightly colored psychedelic cartoon pop art paintings in galleries from London to Beverly Hills. As a Creative Director he worked with his artistic hero, Tom Yohe, to re-launch School House Rock. Skya’s creations have appeared in many popular movies, music videos, and TV shows.
About AI Skya says, “I believe working with artificial intelligence is a positive step and will help many people. However, as an artist, I prefer picking up a pencil and a piece of paper and imagining without limitation, creating from scratch.”
My goal is to make things that are beautiful and communicate my intention behind silly cartoons and pretty colors. Like a bird in the sky, my art may only flash across your eye for a moment but you know it’s beautiful when you see it.”
Tanya Callesen (GiGi)
Tanya Callesen is GiGi. Tanya was raised in a world traveling military household and brings real life perspective and sensibility to every project within Bapabooks. Her life experiences, including living abroad, raising children, coaching and working as an ombudsman for a large school district, have fostered her interest in reading, writing and life-long learning. There is a touch of GiGi in every Bapa Book.
